Since 1318, the fortified stronghold of Bonpas, from the French « Bon Passage », has watched over the safe crossing of the Durance river along the historic route that once linked Rome with Avignon. This gateway to the southern Rhone valley allows you to discover the region's terroirs with their characteristic smooth, round stones. ABV (%) 14 Units 10.5 Grape Variety Grenache, Shiraz/Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault Tasting Notes Subtle notes of spices, followed by wild herbs and black fruits. Full bodied, yet soft, with silky tannins, a rich mouth feel and long finish. History Located near the town of Avignon, at the heart of the Rhône Valley, Bonpas is a former fortified convent given to the Carthusian monks by Pope Jean XXII in 1318. These wines are the legacy of seven centuries of tradition, patience and hard work. Sophisticated and elegant, they embody the terroir and varietals of this famous region through their power and fruity taste. Regional Information The typically Mediterranean climate is held in the sway of the Mistral and a heady blend of seasons that bring each in their turn, heavy rainfall, extremely high temperatures and long intervals of exceptional sunshine. This climate maintains the vines in perfect health and, as the harvest approaches, it brings about a slight, yet beneficial water stress. Current Vintage 2020 Vinification Details The grapes are hand harvested in September from 40 year old vines located in the Rhône Valley. The grapes are then pressed with a pneumatic system, stirring the lees back into suspension at the end of maceration, which adds roundness to the wine's pronounced tannic structure at the end of fermentation. The grapes are fermented for 3 weeks in stainless steel tanks. 10% of the cuvée is aged for 8 months in 1 to 3 year old French oak barrels. This step lends balance and complexity to the wine.
